Open Enrollment
Open enrollment is your time once a year to buy, renew or change your plan for the upcoming year.
What is open enrollment?
Open enrollment is when all eligible Californians can apply for a health or dental insurance plan through Covered California. It lasts from Nov. 1 to Jan. 31.
During this time, you can enroll for the first time, switch plans or renew your plan for the coming year. When you apply, we’ll check your information and see what financial help you could get and what other programs you may be eligible for, including Medi-Cal.
Open Enrollment Ends Jan. 31
Enroll by Dec. 31 for a health plan that starts Jan. 1. Enroll in January for a plan starting Feb. 1.
Molina Is Leaving Some Regions
Molina Healthcare won't offer plans in northeast Los Angeles County or Orange County in 2027. Use Shop and Compare to see what's available and estimate your costs.
How Enrollment Works
Apply
One application covers both Covered California and Medi-Cal.
Choose a Plan and Enroll
Compare your options and pick what fits your budget.
Pay Your First Bill
Pay online, or wait for a bill from your insurance company. This usually takes about two weeks.
Get Your ID Card
Your insurance company mails your membership ID card once they receive your payment. You can use your plan before your ID arrives.

Compare plans to find one that fits your needs and budget. Most people qualify for help paying for their plan.
Other Enrollment Options
If Open Enrollment Is Over
Outside of open enrollment, you can enroll in health insurance if you experience a major life change, like losing insurance or getting married. This is called a special enrollment period. This period usually lasts 60 days from the date of the event.
Otherwise, you need to wait for the next open-enrollment period to enroll.
Medi-Cal Enrollment
Medi-Cal and Covered California share an application, so when you apply we’ll let you know which you are eligible for.
