About Covered California

What is Covered California?

Covered California is California’s health insurance marketplace, established under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act in 2014. It’s the only place in California where qualifying residents can get federal financial help while buying private health insurance.

We are not an insurance company. We don't sell insurance directly or pay claims. Instead, we connect Californians with brand-name health insurance plans from well-known companies and help them get financial help to lower their costs.

CoveredCA.com is sponsored by Covered California and the Department of Health Care Services, which work together to help Californians get the coverage and care that's right for them. Covered California is an independent part of state government, overseen by a five-member board appointed by the governor and the Legislature.

Our Mission

Our mission is to make health insurance accessible and affordable for all Californians — regardless of income, health history or background. We do this by:

• Connecting people with brand-name health insurance plans.
• Helping them understand and access financial help.
• Making sure everyone who applies is connected to the insurance they qualify for, whether that's a Covered California plan or Medi-Cal.
