Understanding Your Costs

There are two main types of health care costs: your monthly premium for having a health plan, and your out-of-pocket costs when you use care. Out-of-pocket costs can include deductibles, copays and coinsurance.

Type of Cost
What It Means
Premium
The amount you pay each month to have a health plan.
Deductible
The amount you pay for covered services before your plan starts paying.
Copay
A fixed amount you pay for a covered service, like a doctor visit or prescription.
Coinsurance
Your share of the cost for a covered service, usually a percentage, after you meet your deductible.
Out-of-pocket costs
What you pay yourself for care. This includes deductibles, copays and coinsurance.
Out-of-pocket maximum
The most you'll pay in a year for covered services. After that, your plan pays 100% of covered costs.
