Health Plan Options for Employees

When you offer health insurance through Covered California for Small Business, your employees can choose from plans from multiple insurance companies. Health plans are organized into coverage levels — Platinum, Gold, Silver and Bronze — so that your employees can find the one that fits their needs and budget. You can review each insurance company's network to see which doctors, hospitals and service areas are included, then get a quote or check your eligibility when you're ready to move forward.

Available Health Insurance Companies

Each company offers a range of health plans across coverage levels and networks. Review their plan details, available options and plan documents.

Choose From Four Coverage Levels

CCSB offers health plans across all four coverage levels: Platinum, Gold, Silver and Bronze. As the coverage level increases, plans generally cover a higher share of medical costs — and employees typically pay more in monthly premiums. As an employer, you control your contribution amount and can offer employees a range of tier options — so they can find the health plan that fits their budget and health needs.

When offering two or three tiers, the tiers must be adjacent, meaning they must be next to each other in the tier sequence. For example, Bronze and Silver qualify, but Bronze and Gold do not.

What to Consider

Before offering health plans to your employees, review these key factors to find the right fit for your business.

  • Coverage Levels

The coverage levels — Platinum, Gold, Silver and Bronze — organize plans by how costs are shared between the plan and the employee. Higher tiers generally mean lower out-of-pocket costs for employees and higher monthly premiums.

  • Networks

Each carrier has its own network of doctors, hospitals and service areas. Review network summaries to understand which providers may be available to your employees.

  • Plan and Benefit Summaries

CCSB provides standard benefit summaries for each plan tier. Review these documents to compare what each plan covers and how benefits may have changed from the prior year.

  • Creditable Coverage

If your business has Medicare-eligible employees, you may be required to provide an annual written notice about whether your prescription drug coverage is creditable, meaning it meets Medicare Part D standards.

Creditable Coverage

Employers must provide an annual written notice to each Medicare-eligible employee explaining whether the company's prescription drug coverage is creditable, meaning it covers at least as much as standard Medicare Part D. This information helps employees decide whether they need to enroll in a separate Medicare drug plan.
