Before You Cancel

Canceling ends your Covered California insurance, and you may have to wait until open enrollment to re-enroll, unless you experience a major life change. Generally, you can’t cancel insurance for months that have already passed.

If cost is why you're canceling, it may be worth reporting a change in income or household size first. Sign in to your account to see if your costs change before you make a final decision.

How to Cancel

Submit your cancellation request at least 14 days in advance.

To end insurance on June 30, for example, you would need to submit by June 16.

End your plan on the last day of the month.

Ending your plan on the last day of the month is encouraged. If you cancel mid-month:

• Your health insurance company does not have to refund you for the days you already paid for.
• Your next plan’s start date is likely the first of the following month, leaving you with a gap in coverage.
