Medi-Cal for Children
Many children in California qualify for free or low-cost health insurance through Medi-Cal. In certain counties, they could be eligible for CCHIP. This guide helps parents and caregivers understand children’s insurance options, including who qualifies, what's covered, what it costs and how to apply.
Insurance Programs for Children
Children may qualify for one of two programs: Medi-Cal for Children or County Children’s Health Initiative Program (CCHIP).
When you apply through Covered California, your child may qualify for a different program than you do.
If you decline insurance for your child, they can’t get financial help for a plan through Covered California. This means they would need to be enrolled in a full-cost plan.
Which program your child gets depends on:
- your child’s age
- your household income
- where you live
- your child’s immigration or citizenship status

Applying through Covered California is free. One application checks what each family member qualifies for, including Medi-Cal and CCHIP for children.
